SEVERIN BROWNE'S SONG STARTING WORKSHOPS |
|
Getting his publishing deal with Motown's Jobete Music Publishing Company a few weeks before his 21st birthday in 1970, Severin Browne had to wait until after his birthday to be old enough to sign it. "That was before I even knew how to write a song," says Severin, now a good deal older and wiser. Severin leads a workshop for songwriters and songwriting students that allows each participant to get in touch with an original idea and develop it. Through a series of exercises, the songwriter finds a memory or feeling that may be connected with a personal story. These early ideas are not to be shared with the group, but developed individually by the participant into a lyric. "When we were children all of us were able to make up songs and melodies much more easily than we can now, because we all started out with our creative right-brain leading the way. As we grew a little older our analytical left-brain became more dominant and we stopped using our right-brain for everyday activities." In this workshop, Severin uses a "left-brain / right-brain" exercise to make best use of each side of the brain in the songwriting process. Originally developed for songwriters to find new ideas, Severin has added some basic songwriting principles to make it a workshop for both beginners and long-time songwriters looking for inspiration. There are no Songwriting Workshops currently scheduled. Please contact Severin if you are interested. Each attendee should bring:
"Your class was a great gift to me. You got me to stretch beyond my usual thinking patterns. Not only did this help my songwriting (a very small portion of my musical activity as a full time musician/teacher), but it has impacted my work and life and attitude in very positive and productive ways." "Sylvia has been writing like crazy ever since (your workshop). She's broken the "I don't think I can write" block and has worked on it every day. She doesn't have any "finished" songs yet, but she's gotten several ideas working, using the exercises that you gave us. As for me, the workshop was just the kick in the butt that I needed to get going musically again." "Severin is a guide who teaches the songwriter how to dig deep and retrieve inspiration from the untapped well within." "Your class -- with its mix of creative, intuitive, and thinking exercises -- helped me relax and have fun around the songwriting process." "Severin's class was an incredible tool... His techniques both calmed the body and mind and stimulated the right brain, the creative side, to do what it does naturally... He was a very caring instructor, which is so important with the vulnerability of songwriting." "I've been to 2 classes at camp with you, 2 workshops, and 2 private sessions, and each time you've had new exercises, techniques, and ideas to share. Now with so many tools to draw on I feel better equipped to explore this new land of songwriting. Thank you."The location of the workshop will be Severin Browne's home in Northeast Los Angeles. Directions given at time of registration. Email Severin for registration and information.
